Ethiopian Bible app: English and Amharic reading options

By EthiopianBibleBooks · Sources checked November 2, 2026

For English Ethiopian Bible study, you can use a Bible app for shared biblical books and an ebook reader for separately identified texts such as Enoch. For Amharic, YouVersion has a catalogue attributed to the Bible Society of Ethiopia. The right setup depends on the language and books you want, not whether an app’s title includes “81” or “88.”

We have not verified a single church-authorized English app containing every entry in the church’s published canon. This guide offers practical, identifiable reading routes rather than treating an app-store title as proof of completeness.

The last row is the most important distinction. Installing a reading app and obtaining an appropriate text are separate tasks. A good reader app does not make an unidentified file complete or accurate.

YouVersion: identify the version before reading

YouVersion’s Amharic catalogue lists several versions. One is version 3200, attributed to the Bible Society of Ethiopia and titled የአማርኛ መጽሐፍ ቅዱስ (ሰማንያ አሃዱ). Its record provides book navigation, a reading link, and an audio access route. It is an Amharic resource, not an English translation.

Start from the version’s own record. Open the book selector and look for the particular text you need. Do not assume all editions in the same language have identical contents, or that selecting an English interface changes an Amharic scripture text into English.

On Bible.com, the official help page explains how to change the Bible version and language separately, select books, and use parallel mode to display two versions. It also states that offline Bibles are unavailable on the web app. Source: YouVersion’s Bible.com guide.

For a study session, write down the version abbreviation or full title in your notes. “Read it in the app” is not enough information to identify the translation later.

Reading English Enoch in an ebook app

You do not need a dedicated Ethiopian Bible app to read an English Enoch ebook. Project Gutenberg’s Book of Enoch record supplies Charles’s historical translation in online, EPUB, and text formats. The record marks the work as public domain in the United States and identifies the source publication.

For a phone reading setup:

  1. Open that record and check the translator and edition information.
  2. Download the offered EPUB3 file.
  3. Open the saved file in a compatible ebook reader.
  4. Adjust the text size and check both ordinary paragraphs and notes.
  5. Keep the title and translator visible in your reading notes.

Project Gutenberg’s device guide gives instructions for iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle, and desktop reading. For iPhone and iPad it describes opening the saved EPUB through Files and choosing an app such as Books. For Android it describes opening a downloaded EPUB with a compatible reader. For Kindle it directs readers to Send-to-Kindle rather than opening the downloaded EPUB directly in the Kindle app.

This route gives you one identifiable book with adjustable digital text. It does not add the rest of the Ethiopian canon to the file. See our free text and PDF guide for additional reading sources.

Will it work offline?

Test the exact text and device before relying on offline access. Open the saved book while disconnected and check a later chapter as well as the first page. A browser tab that loaded once may not contain the whole work.

For YouVersion on iOS, the official help instructions describe downloading eligible Bible versions and warn that not all versions are available to download. The same page says the current app generally does not support offline audio downloads, with exceptions. That is separate from downloading the text. Source: YouVersion’s iOS offline guide.

Do not transfer that platform-specific statement to every YouVersion product or device. Check the current instructions for the app you actually use. If listening is your priority, our audio guide identifies recordings and explains their coverage.

Evaluating an “88 books in English” app

An app’s advertised book count should lead you to its contents list. It should not end your investigation. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s published list has 81 entries, some of which group works together. A commercial developer may use a different counting method or include additional texts. Before paying or subscribing, look for:

  • An accessible contents list: can you see the individual books before purchase?
  • Translation credits: who translated Enoch, Jubilees, Meqabyan, and the other supplied texts?
  • A clear identity for Meqabyan: a generic Maccabees label is not enough to establish that it supplies the Ethiopian works.
  • A stated scope: are you getting full texts, summaries, selected readings, or commentary?
  • Clear access terms: which features remain available without an account, subscription, or internet connection?

Compare the contents with our annotated books list, allowing for grouped names. The 81-versus-88 explanation shows why a larger total is neither proof of greater authenticity nor, by itself, proof that a product has no value.

Make your digital library useful for study

Keep a short source note for each file: title, translator, edition year, and the website or publisher from which you obtained it. When you bookmark a passage, include its chapter and verse as well as the app’s location marker. That makes your notes portable if you switch readers later.

For a manageable beginning, use our reading plan and work through one text at a time. We are preparing our own independent companion workbook and will earn money from its sales. See our planned study guide for the current status. We are not presenting it as an app or a complete Bible translation.

Sources and method

This guide is based on primary catalogue records and official help documentation. We have not installed or tested every app marketed as an Ethiopian Bible, certified a complete English catalogue, or assessed every platform’s privacy practices.
