Ethiopian Bible PDF: free English texts and online reading

By EthiopianBibleBooks · Sources checked November 2, 2026

You can read English translations of Enoch and Jubilees free online, and download a historical scan of Jubilees as a PDF. The sources below identify their translators and editions. They are individual texts, not a verified English PDF of every book in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s published canon.

If your goal is to start reading today, choose Enoch or Jubilees from the table. If your goal is a complete English Ethiopian Bible, compare the contents of any proposed download against the source-mapped 81-book list, then check its translation credits. A file name containing “complete” or “88 books” does not establish its coverage.

How to get the Jubilees PDF

Open the Internet Archive record for Charles’s 1902 Jubilees. Check the title and publication date, then look for Download Options and the PDF choice currently supplied by the repository. You can also open the book reader to inspect the original title page before downloading.

The scan includes the original volume’s introduction and notes. If you want to begin with the translated text, use its contents rather than assuming that the first pages after the cover are chapter 1. The repository separately offers machine-readable text and other formats, so choose the scanned PDF if preserving original page numbers is important to you. For a passage citation, record the translator, edition year, chapter and verse, and—when relevant—the printed page number. A PDF viewer’s page number may include covers and front matter, so it may differ from the number printed on the scanned page.

How to read Enoch without downloading a PDF

For a phone or ebook reader, a reflowable format may be more comfortable than a fixed-page scan. Project Gutenberg provides Charles’s Book of Enoch as online HTML, EPUB, and text. Its record identifies the translator and marks the work as public domain in the United States. Source: Project Gutenberg.

Open Read online for immediate browser reading. Choose EPUB if you want a file for a compatible reading app with adjustable type. Use the source’s own reading instructions for your device rather than installing a separate “Ethiopian Bible” app just to open one book.

Our app and offline-reading guide explains practical phone setups. If you prefer listening, the audio guide identifies recordings and distinguishes their actual book coverage.

If you specifically need a printable copy, use a source’s permitted print or download options. Browser printing can be useful for a short reading, but inspect the print preview: chapter navigation, menus, and footnotes do not always produce a clean handout. Keep the translator and source details with the passage.

Is there a complete 81-book Ethiopian Bible PDF in English?

We have not verified a freely downloadable, church-authorized English PDF that covers every entry in the church’s published list. That leaves two separate questions to ask of any file you find:

  1. Does it contain the claimed texts? Compare the table of contents, including grouped entries, rather than counting headings alone.
  2. What are its translations and permissions? Identify the translator or source edition for each component and the basis on which the file is distributed.

The church’s English webpage lists 46 Old Testament entries and 35 New Testament entries, with some works grouped together. Its English labels can require explanation: the Ethiopian Meqabyan, for example, should not be identified merely by substituting the Greek books of Maccabees. See the completeness guide and 81-versus-88 guide. Source: church canon page.

An English PDF can be useful even when it contains only selected books. The important thing is to know the selection. Enoch plus Jubilees is a worthwhile beginning, but it is not the same reading collection as the whole canon.

What older free translations can and cannot do

Charles’s translations let you read substantial texts without purchasing a modern edition. Their introductions also show how earlier scholars approached those books. Treat the publication date as part of their identity, however: an old book’s newly created PDF or EPUB does not make the translation new.

For comparison, Fortress Press publishes modern Hermeneia translations of 1 Enoch and Jubilees. Their publisher descriptions explain the use of surviving textual evidence and notes. The publisher’s samples are previews, not permission to download or redistribute the complete commercial editions.

If a difficult passage matters to your interpretation, compare an older free translation with a modern scholarly one. Our English translation source index distinguishes historical texts, modern editions, and partial resources.

Read legally and keep the source attached

Use the download supplied by the repository, publisher, or rights holder. Read its stated terms and territorial notices. Project Gutenberg’s public-domain statement is specifically for the United States; it should not be silently turned into a worldwide permissions claim. Source: the Gutenberg record.

A searchable PDF is a convenient format, not evidence of authorization. A copyrighted translation may be readable through a library or available as a publisher sample without being available for unrestricted redistribution. Link to that legitimate access route rather than treating every uploaded copy as a free edition.

Start with one manageable reading

Choose a short passage in Enoch, note its chapter and verse, and write a one-sentence summary before moving on. Keep a separate note of what the text says and what you think it means. That small distinction makes later comparison with another translation much easier.

For a longer sequence, use our beginner reading plan. We are also preparing our own independent companion workbook and will earn money from its sales. See our planned study guide for its current status; its final title and contents are not yet confirmed.
